How leading universities structure these courses

Ivy League universities and leading private business schools - such as INSEAD, IESE, and NEOMA Business School - tend to use experiential learning far more than traditional universities. They actively integrate simulations in various courses. Rather than treating practical application as an end-of-term capstone, these elite institutions integrate experiential learning into their everyday coursework. The sequence usually looks like this:

  1. Establish the vocabulary and core method.
  2. Show how the method is used in a realistic example.
  3. Give students a task where they must apply it themselves.
  4. Ask students to explain, defend, or revise their recommendation.
  5. Use feedback and reflection to connect the activity back to the theory.

This structure matters because business school students are not only learning concepts. Designing a more applied business school course

The common gap in many business school courses is not content; it is application.

A useful test is whether each major topic produces a student output. If a session ends only with students knowing a framework, the course is still theory-heavy. If it ends with students using that framework to make or defend a decision, the course becomes more applied.

Students can often learn definitions, frameworks, and formulas from lectures, textbooks, or AI tools. The harder part is using those ideas in context: choosing which framework matters, interpreting messy information, working with other people, making a recommendation, and defending it when challenged. A practical way to structure a session is:

  1. Teach the concept Explain the method, framework, model, or decision problem directly. Students need clarity before they can apply anything.
  2. Show a worked example Demonstrate how the concept is used. This helps students see what good application looks like before they are asked to do it themselves.
  3. Give students an applied task Ask students to use the concept in a specific situation. The task should require action, not just discussion.

Artificial intelligence is changing both what business students need to learn and how they will work after they graduate. Where should a simulation be used in a course?

A simulation should be placed where it reinforces the learning outcomes, not added as an unrelated activity at the end of the term.

A simulation is not required in every session or every course. It is most useful when students already understand the relevant concept and need to apply it in a realistic decision context where the answer is not obvious.

Instead of asking students only to discuss a topic, a simulation gives them a role, a situation, information to interpret, decisions to make, and consequences to manage. Students work individually or in teams, depending on the simulation, and experience the pressure of making decisions with limited time and incomplete information.

How simulations support applied learning
