Learning outcomes

These intended learning outcomes use assessable verbs and constructive alignment so each can produce evidence for course review. Bloom's taxonomy is used once as a design check rather than as decoration: early outcomes establish analytical vocabulary, while later outcomes require evaluation, synthesis and defence.

Frameworks support strategic judgement. They do not make the strategic decision.

Credit the quality of evidence selection, causal reasoning, trade-offs, assumptions, option comparison and implementation logic. A beautifully completed framework with no strategic implication should not outscore a less polished analysis that makes a defensible choice and shows what would change it.

Adapting for undergraduate and postgraduate students

The architecture can remain stable across final-year undergraduate, MSc, MBA and executive education cohorts. The difference should be scaffolding and cognitive demand, not a simplistic division between easy and advanced topics. Undergraduates can analyse competitive forces and corporate scope if the evidence and task are clearly framed. Postgraduate and executive cohorts can be given less complete information, more contested objectives and a higher burden of assumption defence.

For a 12-session semester, 24-36 contact hours can sit inside roughly 150-180 notional learning hours once preparation, reading, simulation work and assessment are included. Local regulations control the final credit conversion.

The 12-session syllabus

The syllabus follows the full strategy lifecycle: define the problem, diagnose the external and internal setting, build and compare options, make choices about competition and scope, translate them into growth and innovation decisions, then implement, govern, measure and adapt. Application is distributed throughout the course rather than deferred to the final class.

The design principle worth retaining if you change the sequence is simple: every session should produce something that can be challenged, revised or carried into the capstone.

Simulations: What they are and why they belong in this course

Business Strategy is a decision-led subject. Lectures and cases can establish the logic of PESTLE, Five Forces, resources, business models, scope and implementation, but students only expose the quality of their judgement when they must prioritise evidence, disagree with another perspective, commit to a recommendation and live with its consequences.

Applied simulations are most useful after students know the framework and before the final written recommendation. They create a documented decision point for debrief, comparison and reflection. The activity still needs teaching before it and debrief after it: a simulation is not a substitute for conceptual instruction and should not be added simply as entertainment.

There is also a course-design and accreditation rationale for experiential work. Major business-school frameworks emphasise application, engagement and evidence that students can evaluate and act, not only recall. The strongest internal case for an applied activity is therefore the quality of the evidence and debrief it creates, not novelty.

AI impact on Business Strategy teaching

Generative AI changes the signal value of strategy coursework because it can draft an environmental scan, populate a framework, propose options and write a polished recommendation in seconds. That does not eliminate the assessment task; it shifts the valuable evidence toward what the student selected, verified, excluded, connected and defended.

A permitted-use policy is usually clearer than silence. Where local regulations allow it, students can use AI for structuring, search-term generation, first-draft comparison or checking, but they should declare use and remain responsible for source verification, calculations, assumptions and recommendations. Credit should move toward evidence quality, missing information, contradictions, option trade-offs, implementation feasibility and oral or written defence.

Assessment options for a Business Strategy course

The intended learning outcomes reward judgement rather than recall, so assessment should ask students to recommend and defend. A common defensible split is one substantial group applied output plus an individual defence or reflection, subject to local regulations.
