What does a Strategic Management course cover?

Adapting for undergraduate and postgraduate students

The architecture can work across final-year undergraduate, MSc, MBA and executive education. What changes is scaffolding, ambiguity and the standard of defence, not whether students are allowed to encounter difficult ideas. Undergraduates can analyse bargaining power or implementation risk if the decision is well framed and the evidence is accessible. Postgraduate cohorts should be expected to decide what evidence matters, challenge framework limits and defend a recommendation under uncertainty.

For a typical semester version, 24-36 contact hours can sit inside roughly 150-180 notional learning hours, with the balance used for reading, research, simulation preparation, group work and assessment. Local credit values and quality rules should control the final design.

Simulations: What they are and why they belong in this course

Strategic Management is a decision-led subject. Lectures and readings can explain frameworks, but strategic judgement becomes visible when students must prioritise evidence, take a position, negotiate disagreement and defend a recommendation. Simulations are useful because they create a common decision environment while still allowing teams to reach different conclusions from the same information.

The strongest placement is after the relevant theory. In this course, PESTLE Analysis follows macro-environment teaching, Porter's Five Forces follows industry analysis and SWOT Analysis follows both external and internal diagnosis. The activity then tests application rather than introducing the framework for the first time.

There is also an accreditation argument for well-designed experiential work. Major business-school quality frameworks emphasise engagement, application and evidence of learning. A structured simulation with decisions, written rationales and a documented debrief can contribute to that evidence when it is embedded in the module's own intended learning outcomes and assessment design.

AI impact on Strategic Management teaching

Generative AI changes Strategic Management teaching because it can produce a first draft of almost every visible artefact: PESTLE lists, Five Forces analyses, SWOT matrices, competitor summaries, strategic options, board papers and implementation plans. That makes polished output less useful as proof of learning unless the lecturer can see how evidence was selected, assumptions were tested and the recommendation was defended.

A practical response is to shift credit from framework completion and prose quality toward judgement. Ask what evidence is material, what is missing, which source is trustworthy, what alternative was rejected, what assumption would reverse the decision and how implementation will test the strategy. Oral defence, in-class challenge, version history and individual reflection can create attributable evidence around group work.

How AI is changing the subject

AI can accelerate scanning, summarisation and option generation, but strategy still depends on defining the problem, setting boundaries, interpreting ambiguous evidence and choosing trade-offs. Students therefore need to learn both how to use AI efficiently and where its apparent confidence can hide weak evidence or incoherent reasoning.

Why this session matters

It is the hinge between analysis and choice. Students see that PESTLE, Five Forces and internal analysis are not competing frameworks. They answer different questions and become strategically useful when their findings are integrated and prioritised.
