A Negotiation course should teach students how to diagnose interdependence, prepare interests and alternatives, set targets and limits, claim value, create value across several issues, exchange information, manage power and ethics, handle difficult tactics and impasse, coordinate multiple stakeholders and design agreements that can be implemented. The strongest sequence moves from diagnosis and preparation into bargaining behaviour, then into complex bilateral and multi-party decisions.
You can run the course for final-year undergraduates, MSc and MBA cohorts or executive learners, typically within 24-36 contact hours and roughly 150-180 notional learning hours for a full semester elective. The key distinctions students must learn are BATNA versus target, positions versus interests, value creation versus value claiming, influence versus deception, and agreement versus a genuinely good negotiated outcome.

It is particularly useful where the course owner needs more than engaging role-play. A Negotiation course covers the full decision lifecycle: diagnosing interdependence, preparing interests and alternatives, setting targets and reservation points, bargaining over scarce value, creating value across multiple issues, gathering information, using leverage, managing ethics and trust, handling difficult tactics and impasse, coordinating teams and coalitions, and converting agreement into implementable deal terms.
The course should keep several distinctions visible. BATNA is not a target, a high anchor is not automatically a good strategy, cooperation does not remove distributive conflict, power does not justify deception, and agreement does not by itself prove success. Students should leave able to decide when to negotiate, what to protect, where to trade, when to walk away and how to defend an agreement or no-deal outcome with evidence.

The intended learning outcomes below are written for constructive alignment. Each uses an assessable verb and can be evidenced through preparation, live decisions, written analysis or oral defence. Bloom’s taxonomy is used once here as a design check: the course begins with explanation and application, then moves toward analysis, evaluation and defence.
The sequence reflects patterns commonly seen in Ivy League and leading global business-school courses on Negotiation and related modules such as organisational behaviour, leadership, conflict management and dealmaking. This is a course-design pattern, not a claim that every leading school uses the same syllabus.

The following notes turn each concept into a professor-ready teaching unit with a central question, teachable coverage, outcomes, a runnable numerical example, common difficulty, reading/check and an accurate simulation-fit note.
This alignment map keeps the course from becoming a sequence of disconnected tactics. Each stage leaves behind an output, so the final assessment becomes an assembly of earlier evidence rather than a cliff at the end.

Models, frameworks and AI can support negotiation judgement. They do not make the negotiation decision.
The architecture holds across final-year undergraduate, MSc, MBA and executive education. What changes is scaffolding, technical depth and tolerance for ambiguity. Undergraduates can handle complex terms when the decision is bounded; postgraduate and executive learners can be asked to diagnose incomplete briefs, manage internal politics and defend assumptions with less guidance.
Do not differentiate only by removing difficult topics. Raise the cognitive demand instead: fewer templates, more uncertainty, stronger evidence requirements and greater responsibility for process design.

The syllabus follows a deliberate arc from diagnosis and preparation through value claiming, value creation, communication, power, ethics, multi-party coordination and complex deal negotiation. Application appears throughout rather than being deferred to a final capstone.

Negotiation is a decision-led subject. Students can learn BATNA, anchoring, value creation, power, ethics and deal structure from lectures and readings, but they only discover whether they can use those concepts when another party has different information and incentives. Structured simulations create that opposition while keeping the case, time and evidence controlled enough for teaching.
The strongest use is after concept teaching, with a pre-negotiation preparation task and a debrief that compares plans, decisions and outcomes. The platform records team decisions, agreed terms and comparative outcomes for the relevant simulation. That evidence supports academic judgement; it does not replace it, and it does not establish which individual student made which argument.
There is also an accreditation and quality-assurance rationale. Applied, role-based decisions can produce evidence that students can analyse, evaluate, communicate and defend rather than only recall. A simulation is not a substitute for teaching the concept and should not be treated as a reward at the end. It is most useful when students already hold enough theory to explain what they did and why.
The two strongest Finsimco fits for a general Negotiation course are M&A and Startup Funding. Both place students into opposing roles, require linked terms and create multiple defensible outcomes. Debt Financing and Debt Restructuring are particularly valuable in finance-oriented cohorts; ESG and Corporate Governance broaden the course into multi-party stakeholder bargaining. PESTLE Analysis, Porter’s Five Forces and SWOT Analysis are shorter options for evidence-based disagreement and alignment.

AI changes the signal value of traditional negotiation coursework because it can draft preparation plans, questions, concessions, term-sheet language and reflections. That does not remove the need for teaching. It shifts credit toward assumptions, evidence selection, source verification, missing information, live adaptation and the student’s ability to defend a choice when challenged.
A practical permitted-use policy is often stronger than silence: permit defined preparation and checking tasks, require declaration, keep confidential case material protected and make the student responsible for every factual claim and live decision. Local academic-integrity rules should govern the final wording.
AI can broaden option generation and rehearsal, but negotiation remains interactive. Counterpart behaviour, credibility, emotion, authority and implementation cannot be inferred reliably from a polished generated plan. The teaching opportunity is to compare AI suggestions with evidence from the actual negotiation.

Why this session matters: it connects nearly the whole course in one observable decision. Students must prepare limits, use evidence, ask questions, trade across issues, decide whether the package is implementable and defend agreement or no-deal.
The intended learning outcomes reward judgement rather than recall, so assessment should ask students to recommend, negotiate and defend. A common defensible split is a group applied output carrying most of the summative weight plus an individual preparation note, reflection or oral defence, subject to local regulations. The strongest courses do more than stage lively role-plays. They repeatedly ask students to prepare, use evidence, make trade-offs, protect ethical boundaries and explain why an agreement or no-deal outcome was defensible.
