Adapting for undergraduate and postgraduate students

The architecture can stay constant across final-year undergraduate, MSc, MBA and executive education cohorts. What should change is scaffolding, cognitive demand and tolerance for ambiguity. Undergraduates can handle difficult topics such as pay equity, employee relations and AI governance when the decision question and evidence are clear. Postgraduate and executive learners can be asked to decide what the problem is, challenge the evidence and defend implementation under pressure.

Use local course, module or unit terminology and adjust contact hours, notional learning hours and assessment weightings to institutional rules. The distinction below is about learning design rather than academic prestige.

Simulations: What they are and why they belong in this course

Human Resource Management is a decision-led subject, but not every HRM topic needs a simulation. Recruitment criteria, reward budgets, performance decisions and people analytics can be taught well through cases, datasets, role plays and design workshops. Simulations add most value where students must negotiate with stakeholders who have different objectives and where the final outcome depends on evidence, trade-offs and collective approval.

For this course, the approved Finsimco simulations are deliberately adjacent rather than dedicated HRM products. ESG can make employee voice, wages, workforce numbers and stakeholder negotiation tangible within a responsible-business case. Corporate Governance can make executive accountability, conflicts of interest and governance safeguards tangible. The lecturer should frame both through an HRM question before the activity and return to HRM concepts in the debrief.

There is also an assurance-of-learning reason to use applied decision work. A structured activity can produce observable team choices, a documented debrief and follow-up individual evidence. That supports programme-level evidence that students can apply and evaluate rather than only recall. AI impact on Human Resource Management teaching

AI changes HRM teaching because it can accelerate many first drafts: job descriptions, interview questions, policy text, learning content, performance summaries, workforce scenarios and dashboard commentary. That makes the finished artefact a weaker signal of learning. The course should shift credit toward problem framing, evidence selection, assumptions, data limitations, fairness, human accountability and the student’s ability to defend what they would actually do.

A practical permitted-use policy is clearer than leaving students to guess. AI may support exploration, structuring and checking where the assessment allows it, but students should declare use, verify evidence, protect confidential information and remain responsible for the final HR judgement. Consequential people decisions should always have an accountable human owner and a route for review or challenge.
