What a first-round interview is actually for
The first round carries a heavy load in most graduate processes: verify basic capability, check communication, gauge motivation, screen for red flags. It is a go/no-go filter - and an expensive one, at an hour or more of combined recruiter and hiring-manager time per conversation, multiplied across ten to twenty candidates per role.
It is also a filter with a ceiling. Google famously analysed years of its own hiring data and found that four interviews predicted the final decision with 86% confidence - every interview beyond that added less than 1%. Interview signal flatlines fast, and it is weakest exactly where the volume is highest: at the first round, where the pool is widest and the criteria loosest.
Two market shifts have pushed that filter past its limits. First, application volumes: large firms now receive up to 50,000 applications between October and December alone, and even a single associate-level role in London can draw 500 CVs. Second, AI: candidates use it to draft applications, so the CVs at the top of the funnel have converged on the same polished language, and the screening call has quietly become the verification step - the least time-efficient activity in recruitment. The same applies inside the interview room, where prepared candidates deliver word-perfect answers to predictable questions, and interviewers end up scoring buzzwords rather than capability.
What cannot be rehearsed is a live scenario the candidate has never seen. That is the shift that makes the table below possible.

90% fewer screening interviews: how the process changes

The arithmetic of screening at scale
Take a team hiring 50 graduates a year at a typical load of 15 first-round interviews per hire, at roughly one hour of combined recruiter and hiring-manager time each. That is 750 hours a year spent on conversations with candidates who will not progress. Can candidates game a simulation the way they game a CV?
